built on execution — not
theory.

DANSANTAN is an owner-operator led franchise investment holding company. We’re built by operators who have spent decades inside franchised businesses — living the gap between strategy on paper and execution on the floor.

Holding & Operating Leadership

We’ve built and operated across Grocery Retail and Liquor, Coffee and Café, — inside Franchised Environments where margins, stock flow, people, and compliance matter daily, as well as corporate Wholesale and Distribution scaling Independent Retailers in one of South Africas biggest listed Supermarket Chains.

Our experience shapes how we invest, operate, and advise: focusing on disciplined execution, tighter unit economics, and simple operating systems that work under real world pressure.

HOW IT WORKS

A clear, operator-led engagement model

No pitches. No packaged programmes. Clarity first — then execution, if aligned.

01

Start with clarity

Run a Sanity Check or start a conversation. We begin with the unit — economics, structure, risk exposure, and decision constraints.

Tools before opinions.

02

Assess reality

If we go deeper, we assess execution — operating discipline, controls, people, systems, and where value is created or leaking.

What breaks businesses is rarely hidden.

03

Choose the right path

After assessment, one of three outcomes follows: we invest, we advise, or we step away. Saying no is part of the model.

Not every opportunity deserves involvement.

04

Execute hands-on

If we commit, we stay close to operations and focus on decisions that move the needle — prioritising cash flow, discipline, and durability.

We don’t observe businesses. We operate them.

This model is deliberate. It filters noise, protects focus, and ensures alignment before momentum.

WHAT WE DO

Three ways we get involved — always grounded in execution

We don’t force a single engagement model. How we participate depends on risk, complexity, and where value is actually created.

Invest

We invest where execution and economics align.

  • • Active owner-level involvement
  • • Focus on cash flow and controls
  • • Long-term operating value

Not passive capital or financial speculation.

Advise

Operator-led advisory for owners who stay accountable.

  • • Unit economics & cash flow clarity
  • • Operating rhythm & controls
  • • Decision support, not delegation

Not consulting decks or generic frameworks.

Operate

Direct operating involvement where execution risk is real.

  • • Embedded operating leadership
  • • Process & control implementation
  • • Stability and transition planning

Not permanent management replacement.

Each mode is deliberate. We choose the lightest structure that still produces real outcomes.

PORTFOLIO

Operating experience across grocery, liquor, and café retail

We don’t list brands to impress. We list them to show the operating environments we’ve lived in—where margins are thin, people issues are real, and daily controls decide the outcome.

Corporate leadership + owner-operator experience

SPAR Group

Led at executive level and operated at store level. I served as Managing Director and on the SPAR Group Executive Committee, then went on to own and operate SPAR, SUPERSPAR, and TOPS stores—living the same margin, cash-flow, and people realities operators face daily.

  • Executive leadership inside a JSE-listed retailer
  • Format and operational turnarounds across markets
  • Store-level ownership: grocery + liquor retail execution

WHO IT’S FOR

Clarity for the right operators — and an honest “no” for everyone else

We work best with owners who value discipline, accountability, and execution. If that’s not you, this won’t be a fit — and that’s intentional.

This is for you if…

  • • You are an owner or principal, not a spectator
  • • You care about unit economics, cash flow, and controls
  • • You want clarity before growth
  • • You’re willing to confront what isn’t working
  • • You want decision support, not decision replacement
  • • You’re building for durability, not a quick flip

You value progress measured in outcomes — not activity.

This is not for you if…

  • • You’re looking for passive or hands-off returns
  • • You want someone else to run the business
  • • You expect guarantees, shortcuts, or quick wins
  • • You prefer decks and theory over numbers
  • • You avoid uncomfortable performance conversations
  • • You want scale before discipline

We don’t fix businesses by avoiding reality.

This clarity protects everyone involved. It keeps the work honest, focused, and worth doing.

WHO WE ARE

Built by an operator — sustained by execution

I didn’t choose retail — it chose me.

I grew up inside operating environments where the smell of fresh bread at sunrise mattered just as much as the numbers at close of trade — where people, process, and pressure intersect every day.

For nearly three decades, retail was my classroom. From the shop floor to leading national strategy at SPAR Group, I learned how real businesses work — and why many fail.

I’ve turned struggling stores around, built teams that cared, and learned to measure success in more than just margin. Along the way, I had the privilege of serving as Mr SPAR (2013), helping launch SPAR in Mauritius and India, turning around the EUROSPAR format in Ireland, and serving on the National Executive Committee of a JSE-listed retailer.

And then I walked away — not because I was done, but because I wanted to test everything I had learned with my own capital, my own people, and my own risk.

What operators can expect from us

DANSANTAN exists to bring experienced judgement into the moments that matter: when margins tighten, cash flow gets strained, people issues surface, and decisions can’t wait for perfect information.

1

Commercial clarity: unit economics, margin levers, and working capital — made simple and decision-ready.

2

Operating discipline: rhythms, controls, and standards that hold under real-world pressure.

3

People performance: clear accountability, practical leadership, and a culture that keeps execution consistent.

We don’t bring theory to operators. We bring judgement shaped by responsibility.

How that shows up through DANSANTAN

Today, we build, own, and operate businesses where margins are tight, people matter, and decisions compound daily.

“Experience doesn’t guarantee outcomes, but it does improve judgement.”
